My dog's ears are red, scabby, green, and she's crying. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Female | 22 lbs

My mothers cocker spaniel is constantly itching her ears. Today when I checked her ears I found red open scabs in one ear and green residue in the other. She is always crying and doesn’t allow others to touch her ears. Ever since my mother bought her she has been itching her ears very violently but recently it has gotten so much worse. Im wondering what this could be and what we should do to help her.

This sounds like a serious bacterial or fungal ear infection. Your dog needs to be seen and examined by a veterinarian, the ears will need to be cleaned properly, the ear drums will need to be checked that they are intact and your vet will likely take a swab of the discharge to determine the cause of the ear infection. Your dog will then get treatment and medications according to the diagnosis. It is also possible that such ear infections are caused by certain allergies, Please take your dog to a veterinarian tomorrow.
