My dogs have red eyes and yellowish discharge. Is it contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

Possibly an eye infection that started in one dog and has now spread to two other dogs. Have a yellowish brown mucus discharge coming out. Red around the eye

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to something like an infectious conjunctivitis for example. I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may be able to check for this and other possibilities and treat accordingly with anti-microbial medications. Good luck and have a great day!

Hello. Rumple may have a mild case of conjunctivitis, a corneal scratch or even a foreign body like a weed seed or grass awn under the third eyelid. All of these can be quite irritating & produce the symptoms you describe. so it is probably best to have your vet take a look at the eye. Hopefully, it is not severe & Rumple's eye is looking & feeling better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
