My cat's eye has a membrane after an accident. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | unspayed | 6 months old | 5 lbs

Hi! We've adopted Mani after she was run over by a car about 3 weeks ago -- we hadn't met her before that. Up to a few days after the event, she had her right eye quite darkened. Although the dark color has subsided, some kind of membrane has been present up to now. We don't know exactly if she already had this symptom before the accident or if it was caused by it. Is there some kind of eye drops or medicine which could make take her eye back to normal?

This membrane is normal in cats and dogs. It is called the third eyelid in animals. Sometimes it is always present in animals while other times it is only present if there is an issue with the animal's eye. I would recommend taking Mani to the vet if her eye becomes red, swollen or has discharge from that eye. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
