Is it safe to give my dog Benadryl with Apoquel for itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

Dove takes apoquel for itching when it gets bad. I figured its 1/2 pill every 24 hrs. It doesnt seem to be helping as the pill wears off becuase we give both dogs half a pill for dinner every night. So is it safe to give her benadryl to help with the itching as well?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes. Benedryl can be safely used in conjunction with apoquel. But please give her vet a call to discuss her medications- they may want to increase her apoquel dose or switch to a different medication if it isn’t effective currently.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Both Apoquel and Benadryl can be given twice daily. However, I recommend that you check with your veterinarian who prescribed it before changing the frequency of the medications in case they put her on that dose for something in particular. I find it more effective twice daily. Good luck and have a great day!
