My dog ate nail files and has bloody diarrhea. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 90 lbs

My female lab got into a pack of nail files and ate almost all of them (about 6) shes had diarrhea for the past two days, when I took her out today she was straining and I noticed It was just bright red blood drops coming out. I read that I should feed her some bread to help it pass so I did that. I was wondering what else I could do at home, should I just let it pass? Or should I take her to the vet? She has no vomiting or change in energy.

This indeed sounds like there may be an obstruction now especially since she has not been able to pass any of the nail files with the diarrhea, There is a possibility that the files are just partially obstructing the bowel which is why she is not vomiting. Please take her to a veterinary emergency room now for some xrays. she will definitely need antibiotics due to the bleeding, but she actually may need surgery to remove the files.
