Dog's paw pad scraped, skin peeled. What's the best home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old

My dog has a scrape on his front paw. The skin on the largest pad has been peeled back. It is not bleeding. I can touch and it dose not bother him but he favors it when walking. I put Vaseline on it and it seemed to help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a superficial wound. This is actually quite common. You can soak his paw in an epsom salt bath 3 times a day for 5 days as that may speed up the healing process. Make sure that his paw is dry after each bath and if no improvement is seen after that time period, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
