My puppy is eating less. Should I feed him twice a day now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 5 months and 16 days old

Jasper seems to be eating less. He used to go crazy over his food, but now he doesn't even eat it all. It seemed to happen over time, where he got less and less excited but now he just doesn't eat it all. He eats a little bit though. Should we stop feeding him three times a day? Switch it to two?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Jasper is otherwise acting normal and isn't lethargic or having vomit or diarrhea he may not need as much food or he may not like his food. I tell clients that they can stop feeding 3 times a day at 4 months of age. I would try feeding twice a day and feed 25% less volume that you were 3 times a day. You can try adding water to the dry food to make it more appealing. Or try a new brand of puppy food and gradually switch over. If he is acting sick then repost with symptoms or see a Vet. Have a great day
