My dog's nails are curled like rams horns. How do I find the quick?

I am watching a dog. It's nails are curled under like rams horns. It is not in the pads of their feet, but they make literal circles. Will the quick be as long as the nails as well? I am having trouble finding the quick

The quick can be tricky to find, especially if the nails are darker. If it has been some time since the nails were last trimmed, which is likely it sounds like, then the quick will be longer. The best bet is to trim the nail as close to the pad as possible because it sounds like you probaly can not see the end of the nail. If you can see the end of the nail there is typically an overhanging bit from the top of the nail. It is typically safe to take this off without worrying about the quick as it is in the whole portion of the nail and then you can work back from there. If the nails are lighter in color you can sometimes see where the quick is by looking at the side of the nail. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
