My new kitten is bony and inactive. Is this normal for a rescue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | 1 month and 16 days old

I took in a 1.5 month old street cat a few days back. I can feel his spine very easily when i touch his back. Is that normal? And he is quite inactive throughout the day ad just lies around and also does not meow much (the only time i heard him meow was when I took him to the vet to get him vaccinated.

Hi ! Thank you for contacting us through Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not normal to feel the bones in Simba’ s spine but it could be just related to the fact that he has a bit of hard start in life and will gradually put on more weight as he eats better and he is treated for parasites etc. With regards to the meowing some cats are quite talkative, whilst for other is normal to meow sporadically. I would not worry about this !
