Why is my dog biting his tail raw? Is it behavioral or allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 7 years and 2 months old

My 7 year old Labrador retriever bites his tail from the right and the left side he snaps the hair and has badly injured himself This is the first time that something like this happen..I give him a bath 1 time a week and he takes the flee drops regularly..I have a 2 year old girl and ever since she was born he somehow feels jealous and everytime he sees me kissing her he comes rushing to me to get pampered too..my question is could “biting his tail” be something psychological or not? Thanks in

It can be behavioral but it is likely due to an allergy. The area is red and inflamed and may be infected. An allergies to fleas or something in the environment such as grasses and pollen can cause this. I would see your vet about medication toc clear it and stop the cycle
