My 13-year-old Border Collie: food, grooming, and bad breath advice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female

Hiya I’ve decided to have my mothering laws Border Collie. She’s never had her hair cut, her breath is smelly and I’m not sure what food she needs and how much. She’s about 13 years old so doesn’t do a lot but I feel she needs a bit of tlc. Would you get her hair cut and can you please advise of what food and how much to give her. Thank you very much

At 13 I would recommend feeding a diet formulated specifically for senior dogs such as vet essentials mature or royal canin mature. Grooming should be considered if the coat is matted or greasy, if not then regular brushing at home may be sufficient. I would be concerned about her breath however as this may indicate dental or even kidney disease and I would recommend a full physical and oral exam and possibly a blood panel to assess any underlying medical conditions
