My cat has a recurring crusty, bleeding spot. Could it be a tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 15 lbs

My kitty has a spot on his back about 3 to 4 inches from his tale that keeps crusting over and then gets red and bleeds a little. It seemed to go away last year or I had not felt it in a long while but now is back again, in the same spot. Only one spot. A year and a half ago he had a mast cell tumor removed from his lip that turned out benign. This does not look or feel the same at all but it worries me it may be cancer of some sort. But why go away and come back? Please help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. That type of behavior of coming and going is typical of a mast cell tumor though of course that is not the only possibility. Another possibility is a recurring infection. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
