Why is my intact female cat bleeding from vulva and acting like a mom?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 28 days old | 2.5 lbs

I have a young intact female cat who is showing blood from her vulva. She is playful and active as normal but She is also in contact with another nursing female and has started to lay with and seemingly try to nurse and care for the kittens of my other cat. I wondered if this behavior and bleeding could be hormonal.

A very small amount of blood tinged discharge can be seen during a heat cycle. If there is a larger volume of blood it could be a uterine infection. Either way the hormones could be making her want to care for the kittens but they shouldn’t cause bleeding. If you’re not planning to breed her you may want to consider having her spayed.
