Dog splint on for weeks. Is it safe to remove it myself at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 19 days old | 7.3 lbs

So I took my 7lbs chihuahua ,who’s about 8 months into the vet because He got a little crack through his radius on his forearm . The vet put him on a spint and I’ve been out of town for 4 weeks already and haven’t replaced his bandages or spint . Now I’m too embarrassed to go back to the vet because I think the injury has healed already . Do you think it’s okay if I take it off myself at home ?

Do not be embarrassed, things happen and we are all human. The problem with taking the splint off yourself is that just in case it has not healed, your Beckham may be so happy that the splint is gone, he will start jumping up and down and hurt himself again, ie negate all the healing that has occurred. You are best off to take him to the vet tomorrow to have the bandage taken off. If it looks like everything is ok, then there was no harm done, and should there be a problem it can be addressed right away.
