My dog's diarrhea & vomiting returned after switching to normal food.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 9 months and 15 days old | 21 lbs

I took my dog to the vet last Friday because of diarrhea and vomiting. They couldn't really figure out what was wrong but gave us pills for diarrhea and fluids. She was getting better with that and has been on chicken and rice. Now I'm switching her back to her normal food slowly and she's having diarrhea again. I thought it was just because the food switch but last night she started to throw up. Unfortunatly she swallowed it so I never knew what it looked like. Please help!!!

I'm sorry to hear that Cleo is not doing well. If she improved on a bland diet (chicken and rice), but the signs have returned on her regular food, then I would be suspicious that the food is the cause of the problems. I would recommend resuming the chicken and rice diet to make sure that the signs again resolve with a bland diet. If that is the case, then I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian for a recommendation for food based on what you were previously feeding (brand and protein source), how large the bag was and how long the bag has been open. It may be that Cleo does not do well on that particular brand or flavor of food, it may be a bad bag, or it may have been open too long and started to spoil. Depending on which of these things is most likely, your vet will be able to give you a recommendation on what to try, but I would recommend sticking with chicken and rice for now to make sure that she is back to normal before you make any other changes. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Food allergies are more commonly seen when a dog has been on a food for a long period of time, but it certainly sounds like Arya does not do well on that particular dry food. There are a few reasons why. It could be the protein source, it could be that combinations of ingredients (that particular company), or it could even be that particular bag of food. Since Arya did well on the wet food, you can go ahead and switch her back to that for now. If you do not have any more wet food, you could consider feeding a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). Once she is back to normal, you can slowly transition her onto a new food. You can ask your vet for a recommendation based on what you are feeding now (or you can post another question here with more information about the diets and one of us would be happy to try to help you). Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
