Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 months and 23 days old | 12 lbs

Hello, we recently got beagle mix puppy. she is about 5 months old now. we live in Brooklyn NY. We walk in parks and we have some wild animals in the area. I read about Lepto and Lyme disease vaccinations but not sure if we need to have those. There are a lot of controversial info on the internet. Looking for vet's opinion. We did ask our vet and he gave us pretty much the same answer as internet, it is your choice if you think you should do it, let's do it. thank you

Congratulations on your new addition! In general, we are starting to see a large amount of Lepto in more urban areas because rats can carry Lepto, so I would suspect that the Lepto vaccination would be recommended for Maxi in Brooklyn. Lyme requires a tick bite. So for most dogs, I recommend tick prevention as a better option than Lyme vaccination because it will also protect again other diseases that ticks can carry. I am attaching a link to the American Animal Hospital Association's vaccine guideline below which includes a Lifestyle-Based Vaccine Calculator to help you determine which diseases Maxi may be at risk for to help you make the best decision. https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/canine_vaccination_guidelines/practice_vaccination.aspx Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
