How can I make my senior dog comfortable with arthritis and aging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 13 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

Skeeter is our 14yr old Chihuahua. Here lately he has lost some weight, acting confused sometimes, seems to be getting that blue tint in his eyes and not as active. He does however eat plenty, runs and plays, still goes outside and plays, normal bowl movements as usual and drinks plenty. I understand he is at that age. Is there anything we could do to just make him more comfortable during the afternoon and nights. Can anything be given by mouth to ease his arthritis?

Hi. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If at all possible I recommend a vet visit for Skeeter to do a little senior blood work. Many times this can tell us if there is something wrong that medications or diet change can help. And the vet can also prescribe medication for his arthritis. There is nothing over the counter that is safe for a little dog. Please avoid aspirin even if sold for dogs as many dogs develop severe gastric ulcers from aspirin. Glucosamine supplements such as Dasquin can help but if he is painful her may need something stronger. Sometimes older dogs can benefit from melatonin at night if they are disoriented but discuss the dosing with his veterinarian. I hope Skeeter is comfortable and happy for many more years.

I am so sorry you are concerned about Skeeter. It can be very hard as our beloved pets age to know what is normal and what is not. Although pets can lose muscle mass and develop some deterioration in mental function (senility) as they age just like people, there are also age related medical conditions that can cause these changes as well. And if some of his symptoms are due to discomfort with arthritis there are many options to help him feel better. It sounds like taking Skeeter for a senior pet wellness visit with your family veterinarian is the next best step and this will help to ease your mind. This way he or she can perform a thorough physical exam and discuss options for prescription medications at home if needed. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
