My cat is losing muscle, eating less, and drinking more. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

My cat is somewhat overweight but recently upon petting him I can now feel his spine with all sharp points and his hip bones. I'm concerned he is losing muscle mass. He has decreased his eating but drinks alot. He acts fine in all other ways. Not sure if this is due to the summer and hot weather. He is strictly an indoor cat. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend that Callie see a veterinarian. Loss of muscle and increased water intake can be signs of diabetes or kidney disease. Overweight cats are at increased risk of diabetes so I strongly recommend going to the vet for possible bloodwork to see if Callie is having an issues.
