My dog ran after luxating patella surgery. Is his recovery ruined?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My dog had surgery to correct a luxating patella in his rear right leg a week and 2 days ago. Just now on his walk he slipped out of his leash and ran away for a block at a full sprint. I caught him and brought him home and put him back in his crate, he doesn't seem to be in any pain and was even still putting some weight on the leg. Would I know if I've ruined the recovery for the surgery? Or is it something only time will tell as he heals and the luxating patella isn't corrected?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Goodness! I think that if he is using the leg like he was BEFORE running off then he is probably fine. He may be more sore tomorrow so we may need to wait. I would be sure you are giving the anti-inflammatories as prescribed by the surgeon. I would also touch base with them tomorrow before the weekend. Be sure on future walks that his collar is tight and he can't slip out again. Good luck!
