Is my pregnant dog's wet spot on the carpet pee or water breaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 45 lbs

How do you tell the difference between a dogs water breaking and just pee? I didn’t see it happen, I just came upon a large wet spot on my carpet. Thank you!

A dog's "water" doesn't break as noticeably it does in humans. It usual happens during the second stage of labor when the dog is actively pushing or straining. Shorty after, a pup is produced. If Ninja is behaving normally and not straining, she likely urinated. If she is close to term, there isn't much room for her bladder in there among all the puppies!
