Why is my cat lethargic and not grooming after giving birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 5 months old

Hi! Peony gave birth 3 weeks ago with 2 new kittens. The other day, she stopped nursing them, and then we kind of forced her to feed her babies(she got mad i wish we didn’t do it we felt really sorry) so anyways, since that day, she felt very lethargic and she won’t groom herself even if she’s wet. She still ate her meal regularly and drink often, i am only concerned about her lethargic state and the way she’s stopped grooming herself. Thank you!

I’m sorry to hear that Peony isn’t feeling well. I am suspicious that she may have refused nursing because she wasn’t feeling well. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. I worry she may have a uterine infection or even a retained placenta or fetus causing illness. An x-Ray and possibly blood work may be recommended to help determine the diagnosis and best treatment plan. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
