What is the clear jelly on my cat's paw pads after being outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 17 lbs

Hi my cat Ebony, he’s 1 year old, escaped out side today when I got him back in he smelled of human feces so I gave him a bath. One paw just kept feeling slippery so kept rubbing it a bit but finally looked at it after he kept meowing and trying to escape (he usually hates bathing but lately has been good) only to find a clear jelly like substance coming from his paw pads on his right back leg. I fear his paw pads might have popped, but I’m hoping he just stepped in something nasty.

Poor Ebony! It sounds like his paws may be injured, and he is likely in pain, so I would have him seen by a vet who can check him and treat accordingly. A vet can prescribe pain medication that is appropriate for him, as pain medication for humans can be toxic to cats. They can also clean the area to help reduce the risk of infection and check him for other injuries he may have ended up with after escaping.
