Why is my hamster's eye half shut and looks like it's sunken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female

My female Syrian (6-8 months old)hamsters left eye is half shut , when she wakes up it takes her a while to let her eye kind of open. It is not red and has no crust on it. I tried to wash her eye gently with warm cloth with water but it didn’t seem to hurt or bother her. It seems as if her eye has sunken into her skin. I Don’t know how to help her or what this is. please help.

I’m sorry to hear this is happening . She could have an injury to the eye and is “pulling” it back to protect it. It is also possible that it appears shrunken if it had ruptured. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Antibiotics may be recommended if there is an injury. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
