Why are my puppy, cat, and I all sick? Could it be contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 26 days old | 2 lbs

I looked after my mum's puppy 3 months ago, she used to be sick alot ect, ever since then I have been terribly unwell, sickness, severe abdominal pain to the point of being hospitalised several times and diahrear. I now have a puppy(9 weeks) and cat (13 weeks) of my own. My puppy threw up bile yesterday and my cat has been sick tonight. No worms in it ect, is it a infection that has spread to all of us ?

I am sorry to hear that everyone has been so sick! The one parasite that can transfer between species that produces symptoms you describe is something called giardia. You may consider asking your physician to test you for it. Other possibilities include salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and campylobacter. When testing my patients for these more rare diseases I use a test through idexx called a GI fast panel PCR. You may Consider asking your veterinarian to run this test. Using proper hygiene when handling pets is important as well as making sure they are not eating any forms of raw diet that can transmit disease. Best of luck and I hope you improve soon.
