My cat pees on my bed. Could it be separation anxiety? What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My cat started to pee on my bed if I leave bedroom door open. If it stays closed, there is no problem and he uses toilet. I have a big apartment and he would only pee on my bed if door is open. This started to happen after I was at home for 1 whole month after operation. Then I started going back to work and this started to happen. I first took him to the vet and got him castrated, but it didn't help. Suspecting separation anxiety, is there a medicine for it?

These types of behaviors can be very frustrating and can be difficult to resolve. The easiest thing to do is to add an additional litter box in that area to see if this helps. A good rule for cats is one litter box per cat plus an additional one. Another option would be trying feliway which is available as a spray or a diffuser to see if this helps with some stress your pet may be experiencing when you leave. Other types of medications for behavior modification would be prescription based so I would recommend reaching out to your family veterinarian regarding those options if necessary. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
