My dog has kidney disease and fatty liver. Why won't he eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | 133 lbs

Hello Dr, My name is Srinivas I have a St Bernard Male 6 years old and has always been very healthy and active. Until recently we've figured out that he has a kidney problem and fatty liver. He's on medication and he isn't eating much for the past 4 days. I got a blood test done and we got to know that his kidney reading is around 57. I am taking all the help I can from Doctors for his recovery. Could you please suggest me as to what medication and diet should I follow for him.

Hello Shrinivas. Bheem likely is nauseous and therefore will not eat. Ask your veterinarian to prescribe an anti-emesis medication such as Cerenia and/or an appetite stimulatn. You should also feed him a so-called renal diet such as Hills prescription diet k/d. Your vet should store that and if not, you can contact Hill's India and ask them where you can source this food. If you cannot find it in Hyderabad, you can call Dr Karkare in Mumbai. He can tell you where to get a good kidney diet for your dog. https://www.justdial.com/Mumbai/Dr-Umesh-Karkare-happy-Tails-Veterinary-Speciality-Khar-West/022PXX22-XX22-130909103224-M2Y7_BZDET Make sure Bheem drinks plenty of water
