Guinea pig kit had expired food. Is the cage and chews contaminated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 26 days old

So I bought a guinea pig starter kit that came with a cage, chews, food bowl, and food. (I have two other cages I was going to connect this cage to them) it arrived today and I just opened the box and saw the chews it wasnt in packaging and they were next to the food. I gave Cosmo the chew and opened the rest. The food said "best if used by 10/29/16" I start to panic. It was inside the cage next to everything. I know the food is bad but is everything else contaminated? Should I wash everything?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cosmo. I would definitely start by removing the expired food and contact the manufacturer or company you acquired it from as they should not be selling expired products. Then it is worthwhile to wash the cage just to be sure. Monitor Cosmo for any changes in appetite or soft stool. If these occur, he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
