Senior dog can't stand, pees herself, and is miserable. Euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | 14 years old | 21 lbs

My 15 yr old miniature poodle has arthritis. After injuring another back leg, she cannot use her back legs to hold her self up-not even to pee or defecate. She just lays there peeing while laying in it. No poop 6-25. So,are her lower body issues contributing to her inability to push her waste out? She is on Lasic for heart failure, blood pressure medicine, Vetmeden and a new anti-inflammatory. She saw a vet last week, but she could kinda walk & poop. Is She is crying & miserable! Time to end it?

Yes, euthanasia is definitely a very valid option here, it is quite likely that inflammation in and around her spinal nerves is contributing to both the paralysis and incontinence and severely impacting her quality of life

I’m sorry you are having to make this tough choice. I always counsel owners that if they feel like their dog’s quality of life is poor, then euthanasia should be considered. It sounds like Gypsy is uncomfortable and in pain and euthanasia may be the best choice for her. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
