My dog ate couch leather. Could it cause allergies or health problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cane Corso | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 21 days old | 100 lbs

My 9 month old cane Corso is about 100 pounds. He may have eaten some of the outer leather on our couch. When he would jump on the couch his nails would rip the outer leather and he nips and pulls pieces off. He seems healthy and all the signs that would indicate distress are not present. He is full of energy, eating well, no vomiting, weight is very good. My question is can eating pieces of the leather off the couch cause skin allergies or problems?

Glad to hear that he is doing well right now. I wouldn't expect eating this would cause allergies but it certainly could cause an obstruction especially if he ate too much of it. I would try to tell him not to chew on it if possible. If he doesn't it while you aren't around, I would consider putting him somewhere else unless he can be supervised. If you notice any lethargy, vomiting or not eating, I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he isn't obstructed. I hope this helps!
