My cat had a huge clay-colored hairball and diarrhea. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

My 11.5yo cat had a severe hair ball and also diarreaha in my bed last night. The BM was clay colored & HUGE for her. She never has a large BM. She was fine after. She always has hairballs. Long hair with grooming OCD. Should I be concerned? No other light colored stools before or today, eating and drinking fine.

Some times cats pass hair in the feces and often that hair/poop will be large and gray colored. This can be normal. I recommend Hills hairball prevention diet, using cat laxative weekly and brushing or combing your cat daily to remove as much loos hair as possible. If the hairballs continue then you may want to consider allergy medication from your veterinarian to reduce her licking and overgrooming.
