My cats' poop stinks up the house. Is it their current food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

I give my cats 9 Lives and Special Kitty cat food but their poop always smells terrible and stinks up my whole house, could it be because of the food? It happens to all three of my cats.

It definitely can be the food. I would check a stool sample and see if they have intestinal parasites. If the stool sample from the litter box is positive I would just treat all 3 of your cats. I would gradually wean them onto another type of food. It can easily be from the food. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I usually consider senior cats to be anywhere over the age of 6-7. So yours are getting close but luckily cats can live a long time! The smelly poop can be from several things including the food especially if it was recently changed, intestinal parasites, or an bacterial infection. You could try to slow transition them to their old food. I would have you vet take a look at them if it isn’t improving and check their fecals. I hope this helps!
