My young dog has a bladder mass and bloody urine. Is it cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

I just adopted a 1 and a half year old Chihuahua from Humane Society. During a routine exam a "mass" was detected in her bladder and vet said urine looked like "red wine". Of course I'm paranoid while I wait for a new appt with the Humane Society where they have "better equipment" to examine mass, that this is Bladder Cancer. Is there ANY thing else it could be? Dog was also having trouble producing pee while outside. I thought Irinary Tract infection but blood work came back with no bacteria

It could be that Chika has urinary stones causing the mass in her bladder and the red color of her urine. Another possibility could be a canine polypoid eosinophilic cystitis, also known as benign inflammatory fibrous polyp. In a year and half old dog, bladder cancer would be rare, so I wouldn't have that at the top of my differential list. I know it's scary, but I try not to get too worried just yet until you have the mass diagnosed. I hope this helps!
