Dog shaking head, pawing at ear. Can I use ear drops at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 15 lbs

Hello! We have noticed my dog continuously putting her back paw in ear and also shaking her head a lot as if her ears are irritated. Is there any drops we can buy before having to visit a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an ear infection. I recommend that you have Macy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy when the appropriate product is used which requires a visit to your veterinarian. Good luck and have a good day!
