My dog has a hard, swollen wound. Is it a hot spot? How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My lab/mastiff Girly is 11 yrs old. She has this wound/sore. I do not know how long she’s had it but I noticed yesterday. It is also hard and swollen the entire area around the wound. I rinsed it with water and trimmed fur for the pics. What is this or cause and how can I treat it?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the photos, it appears that Girly may have a severely infected hot spot. This could have happened from moisture becoming trapped on the fur, allergies, a wound, etc. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Girly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This needs to have the hair completely clipped from the area, antiseptically cleaned and an oral antibiotic most likely. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
