Why is my dog pooping red, mucus-like stool so often? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 3 years old | 26 lbs

My 3y.o. Am cocker spaniel pooped this three times this night. I’m panicking. It’s almost like a vomit. It has mucus like texture and is color red. What can be the possible reason for this? I plan on taking him to the vet tomorrow morning

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Chuck evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. It is very important to have him evaluated on an emergency basis if the diarrhea continues throughout the night as that can result in dehydration which would be concerning. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
