Why is my young puppy scared and having trouble with leash training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 11 days old | 7 lbs

Oscar seems to be very scared if he is picked up or held up, he shakes a lot also he hasn't barked since we got him but he does play and growl, he's also a very smart dog (will bite at your clothing when he needs to use the bathroom) but just can't seem to get the concept of a leash.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Oscar. Young puppies will commonly have trouble adjusting to the leash. Be consistent and use positive reinforcement for him, lots of praise and treats. He will adjust, it will just take time and patience. You can also try different options such as a leash and collar versus a harness. You may consider enrolling him in puppy classes to build confidence so well. I hope this information helps!
