What causes my dog's bulging vein on his side to appear sometimes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 months and 24 days old

Our 10 month old bull arab has a bulging vein down his side. This is the second time we've noticed it pop up. It's not always there.

Some dogs have bulging veins on their body, the vein may be visible all the time or only occasionally, usually when your dog has been having some type of physical exercise which causes the blood flow and blood pressure to increase. everything i mentioned is of course normal but if the vein appears randomly when your dog is at rest for example that would be something i would probably recommend to check (such as blood pressure at rest and heart rate at rest) to rule out any medical condition.
