My dog has Lyme symptoms, negative test. Can it still be Lyme?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We took our dog to the vets and they tested her for lymes she showed all the symptoms but the test came back negative so they treated her with Onsior and Gabapentin she was back and forth and pulled around a lot she does not like vets and was getting stressed and no better in fact worse . So my partner decided that he was not taking her anymore as they kept her in and still came up with no answers but wanted to do more tests. She still is showing symptoms of lymes ? Is it possible she has this ?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, Lyme disease is still possible. Sometimes a test could have a false negative result meaning that it says negative when the dog does actually have the infection. Of course, the other possibility is that she does not have Lyme disease and has something else going on. It would be indicated to test again if they are suspicious or check for other diseases or treat empirically with an antibiotic like doxycycline to see if things improve. Good luck and have a great day!
