Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 years old
Hi I have a two year old Shih Tzu that has been diagnosed with Pyometra. She is on Antibiotics. She had a flood of bloody fluid last Saturday night that went on all night, and then again on Wednesday. The vet thought she seemed a lot better on Friday, but her tummy seems really swollen again. I think this may have been caused by the Alizin injection she had the season before for a mismate and it has upset her hormones. Do you think it would be safe to use Alizin to help with the Pyometra?

Alizin is used to terminate a pregnancy but would not be effective for a pyometra. Prostaglandin F2alpha or dinoprost (marketed as Lutalyse in the U.S., not sure about the name in the U.K.) is a drug that is sometimes used in conjunction with antibiotics for medical management of pyometra. There are potential complications with the treatment so dogs often need to be hospitalized, but it is more effective than antibiotics alone. Sadie is beautiful - I hope she's feeling better soon!
