My dog's umbilical hernia is growing, purple, and hard. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 9.9 lbs

my dog has an umbilical hernia that she was born with and never had any issues with it. she is almost 2 years old. A week ago, it slowly started getting bigger and now it is currently purple and red and getting harder by the day. I am afraid it will rupture. I scheduled surgery for this upcoming week but I do not know if it is safe for her to last another 6 days with it. She does not seem to be in pain but the size and hardness worries me.

This does sound concerning - occasionally an umbilical hernia is large enough that abdominal organs can slip through the hernia and become trapped outside of the body - most commonly intestines or spleen. This is pretty rare however. I would recommend checking in with your vet to see if they want to examine Maggie sooner and determine if surgery should be moved up. If she seems painful, if the area continues to get larger, or if she vomits or has a decrease in appetite you should see an emergency veterinarian.
