Will putting cat fur in bird nests make birds less afraid of cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello! This isn't really a vet question, but I didn't know where else to ask. I was thinking of putting some shed cat fur outside for wild birds to use for their nests, but my area does have a few feral cats around. If birds use the fur in their nests, would it desensitize them or their chicks to the danger of cats and make them more likely to be eaten? Thanks!

No, it would not. Birds will pick up and use any type of hair that is available. They will still be keenly aware of the dangers of a cat. It’s so nice of you to be concerned about them. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach
