My dog's diarrhea returned. Should I see a vet or try home remedies?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 50 lbs

My dog had diarrhea for 3 days straight, he got better for 2 days but now the diarrhea continues. He ate cat feces, I'm not sure if he got a parasite from it or if this is serious enough to take him to the vet. He hasnt had any fever or any other symptoms. Is there anything I can give him to help with his diarrhea?

Because Zeus has had diarrhea for three days straight, yes he does need to see a vet. Whenever a dog has diarrhea for longer than 24 hours, it's considered serious enough to visit a vet. At this point, I do not recommend any home remedies. Please take him into a vet as soon as possible. Best of luck.

He could just have a tummy bug. Take Zeus off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with his normal food over the next two days until he is at the normal quantity of his regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or if Zeus is lethargic and dehydrated, you will need to take him to a veterinarian for an exam.

Since he is going every 3-4 hours it might be a good idea to take him to the vet to prescribe medications to help resolve the diarrhea, especially since he is going in the house at night. If you wanted to try some treatment at home, you could withhold food for 12 hours and then try a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea has improved then continue the bland diet for a few days and slowly transition back to his normal food. You could also add a dog probiotic to his diet. Proviable Forte Kit has a probiotic capsule and paste for diarrhea. If the diarrhea continues then he should definitely been seen by your vet.

Hello. Yes, at this point, a vet visit is recommended. If stool issues continue for more than 3-5 days, sometimes the bacteria in the gut can become altered and an intestinal antibiotic is needed to restore the normal balance. Your vet will probably run a fecal test and May prescribe a medication called Metronidazole or other medications according to the results of the test. Diarrhea can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, a blockage, etc.  I would fast Dexter for 12 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Five days is a long time to have diarrhea, and if both your dogs now have it, it could be due to a sudden change in diet or eating something rotten. You need to have them both seen by a vet today, it's long past the time for home remedies.

If the diarrhea has been going on more than 24 hours and Lj hasn't improved with bland food, probiotics, and Immodium, then it's time to see a vet. There are many possible causes of diarrhea: stress, dietary indiscretion, infection, parasites, and more serious issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, Addisons disease or cancerous changes. You've done a great job trying the simple initial interventions that can help - but if that didn't do the trick, then it's time to have Lj checked out. Hopefully it's still a simple cause that will respond to a course of medication, but sometimes further diagnostics or long-term therapy are necessary. Your vet will likely recommend starting with a fecal sample check to look for microscopic parasite eggs. Depending on exam findings, they may also recommend some initial screening bloodwork to evaluate general body function and help screen for some of the conditions that can be associated with diarrhea. He could have a GI illness causing the diarrhea, or could have eaten something rotten. I can give you a home remedy to see if that help Zeus. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Zues needs to see the veterinarian quickly. Weakness to the point of not caring if he is excreting on himself is a sign of serious illness. Just like people, there are many conditions that can make pets feel sick. This could range from a serious infection to intestinal blockage. Also like us, diseases are best addressed early and this may result in a better prognosis. Zeus needs appropriate medical care today. The doctor will need to learn the underlying cause in order to give appropriate treatment. Bring in a stool sample in case the doctor needs to test it. Best of luck.

What best home remedy for diarrhea and loss of appetite for my dog?
The diarrhea could be caused by any number of things; intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection, even being constipated will sometimes manifest as diarrhea because liquid feces is all that will get by the impacted fecal material. It could be as simple as a dietary indiscretion, meaning she might have gotten into the trash and eaten something that didn't agree with her. Try taking away all food, treats included, for 24 hours. S/he can still have water. This will give the gut a chance to rest. After the 24 hours are up, introduce just a small amount of normal food. Wait a little while and give a little more. Keep doing this until s/he has had her normal amount for the morning. However, if s/he continues to have loose stool, or starts vomiting, loses her appetite, acts lethargic, and/or develops a fever, get her in to be seen by your vet right away as this could indicate a more serious problem.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Athena. If she is otherwise acting normal, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Be sure to provide her with plenty of water though so that she does not become dehydrated. This will allow her gastrointestinal tract to rest and can potentially resolve the diarrhea. Then reintroduce food slowly with very small meals. If this does not work and the diarrhea persists, then she will need to see her veterinarian. Dogs will develop a bacterial overgrowth secondary to GI upset such as from the diet change. She may need an antibiotic to resolve this for her. I hope this information helps!
