My dog has spondylosis. Is stem cell therapy right for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 12 years and 9 months old | 9.5 lbs

My 12 yr. old MinPin, Molly has been diagnosed with spondylosis deformans in Jan. 2018. She's been in PT for 2 yrs. Now she is in extensive PT/Rehab. with acupuncture, laser, massage, exercises and hydrotherapy. Currently I have her on vetridisc, glucosamine, CBD oil and on bad days metacam and tramadol. Is there stem cell therapy for this condition? If so do you have a list of drs. that do this procedure?

Hi there! It sounds like you are doing a whole lot to keep Molly comfortable, and I applaud you for your efforts. Stem cell therapy is generally not recommended for this condition, but doctors that do it are generally board certified orthopedic surgeons that are found at specialty centers. The mainstays of therapy for this condition are generally medical or surgical. If she is not a good surgical candidate, then I would continue with your medical therapy as you are. One thing I would recommend talking to your vet about is a drug called Gabapentin that helps with nerve pain and is generally safe to be given daily. That might help her pain and mobility as well as the other tactics you're doing. I hope this helps!
