Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually it is best to avoid this as Bettas tend to be territorial and aggressive and are generally unhappy when grouped. It is always best to keep them by themselves. Good luck and have a great day!

Most Betta sold in pet stores are males and no they cannot be housed with other fish species because they will fight the other fish. They are also housed in 1-2 gallon sized aquariums or smaller aquariums by themselves since they fight. Good luck with your fish.

I have a beta fish and quite a few guppies. Can I combine them into one tank?
I assume it is a male Beta? They typically are very aggressive and will kill other Fish. You could try to put a divider in the tank to keep them separate. I have seen those at most pet stores. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Male Bettas should be housed alone as they can be quite aggressiv, especially to other male Bettas. He's not lonely. He is likely seeing the fish and displaying at them in the hopes that they will swim away. Watch Thomas closet and you will see him flaring his gills and fins out as he stares them down. It looks quite comical, but to him, it's serious business "guarding" his territory.

Betta are definitively very territorial and you may notice multiple fights for space at the beginning. Definitively the aquarium must have multiple spots for hiding like Terra Cotta Flowerpots and PVC Piping, moss or bushy plants, ornaments, rocks and driftwoods. This will avoid open fights and will provide good places to have some rest.

If you put another male betta in with him they will try to kill each other and will succeed. You would need two female bettas to put in, however a half gallon tank is way too small for three fish, and even for one betta this is not big enough. I suggest you get a 10 gallon tank. Then you can put three bettas in the tank and they will be happy (1 male, two females).

It is very difficult to see the markings of these fish from the pictures. Many fish may be able to live with a Betta if there is a large enough tank. Here are some guidelines on how to pick tabkmates for a Betta. No nibblers – if a fish nibbles at a Betta fish they will get bit back! Bigger fish and colorful fish could be seen to be intimidating – you don’t want to intimidate a fighting fish! To safely mix fish species together, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, you want to choose fish that have similar temperature requirements as your betta. Otherwise the fish can be stressed. Second, you want to get species that have similar oxygen requirements - bettas don’t need a lot of bubblers in their tanks, but not all species are like that, so unless you want to do some adjustments to you betta tank, it is a good idea to get other species that don’t need a lot of oxygen. Third, it depends on how many gallons your tank is. Overcrowding is a common problem for many fish owners, and it can make it very difficult to keep up on the water quality. The general rule of thumb you can use is one square inch of fish per gallon. When using this rule, go based on the adult size of fish, because often people get fish that are young and small and don’t anticipate that they will get bigger! A male Betta can be kept in a 10 gallon tank with 5-6 neon tetras. You will need to monitor for any aggression initially as well as for any fin nipping. Male Bettas are easy to distinguish from females by their brighter colors and larger fins.

Can Betta fish tank have sand from river?
