My dog's eyes are swollen. What to do if the vet is closed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 11 months and 19 days old | 65 lbs

I came home to my dog having swollen eyes. A few days ago we noticed a couple bumps on his fur but thought they were mosquito bites. The eyes only got swollen now. My mom said she might have gotten bitter apple spray near his eyes so we've been wiping his eyes with clean wet paper towels. What's going on? What should we do? The vet's office is closed currently.

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Based on your description and the pictures you provided, it appears as though Brody is having an allergic reaction. I would recommend using Benadryl, which you can read about at this link ( https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/benadryl/ ). If there is no improvement, then I would seek an emergency veterinary hospital that is open 24 hours so you can get him seen sooner rather than later. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. You can also use artificial tears to help cleanse the eyes.
