Is it okay to get a new kitten for my cat after a littermate died?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 months and 5 days old | 2.8 lbs

I recently had a kitten (Pluto, blue collar) pass away four days ago due to severe respiratory, but his littermate (Hades, red collar) is healthy and meowed a lot at the start, as if he was looking for Pluto, but now he’s gotten better. Is it okay to get another kitten companion so soon?

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of Pluto. I'm glad to hear that Hades is doing well. It would be fine to get another kitten anytime for Hades to play with. Since the new kitten won't be a littermate, it will be a little bit of an adjustment period; don't worry if they aren't BFFs right away. But with time, they will likely get along quite well. Again, so sorry about Pluto. Good luck with Hades, and thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
