My allergic cat won't take Benadryl. Are there other options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

So, my poor kitty has some awful allergies. He can hardly ever open his eyes and he constantly has a stuffy nose and snotty face. We were told by the vet just to give him benadryl, but he absolutely refuses and when we do get him to take it, he pukes it back up. Is there anything else that I could possibly give him or is there any ways I could maybe get him to take it without him fighting me of pucking it up? We've tried hiding it in food and treats, but he still seems to know it's there. TIA

You can try liquid Benadryl. Look for the dye free, unflavored version. Another option would be to have it compounded into a palatable tablet or chewable. Your veterinarian may have a preferred compounding pharmacy that he or she works with for these cases.
