My senior dog has a black, blood-filled lump on her chest. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | spayed | 14 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

My 15 y/o dog had a small (head of a qtip) cyst like skin tag on her chest. It was smooth and black, filled with blood. I aspirated it this morning and now it’s somewhat filling back up. What is it?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Looking at the picture you attached, it could be a couple of things. It could be a benign mass, like a skin tag, that has become irritated. There is unfortunately also a type of skin cancer called hemangiosarcoma that can look like this though. I would recommend taking her into your vet. They will likely ask you how long it has been there, about any changes in size/shape, and recommend a small skin biopsy. I hope this answers your question.
