My dog's heat cycle is lasting over 19 days. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 88.185 lbs

My German shepherd is on her heat cycle for more than 19 days from now . I have done her mating on 10 and 12 day of her periods . I want to know is it normal if her periods last for such a long time . Now it is very deep red in color. Few months ago she was anaemic but I have treated her with thrombofit syrup. Is it normal if her periods last for such a long time . I mean she is still on her periods. I will be waiting for your reply doctor. Thank you so much.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Alsa. Yes, this is still normal. Most heat cycles will last approximately 18-21 days in a dog. If she does not stop bleeding after this amount of time, begins bleeding elsewhere (nose bleeds, bloody vomit, etc) or is acting ill, then she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
