My dog swallowed plastic, vomiting white foam. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

For the past 3 days, Dusty has been throwing up white foam with small pieces of aluminum foil/plastic paper. A few days ago (but I just found out right now), he chewed up a bag of empty treats and accidentally swallowed some pieces of the bag. I was wondering if I should be worried? Should I take him to the vet or should I let him throw up all the pieces on his own?

There are a few things to consider. -how often is Dusty vomiting? If he's vomiting once a day for 3 days with little pieces of foil/paper, I'm less concerned than if he is vomiting more frequently. -is he eating? If he still has an appetite, thats a good sign. If he is not eating, you need to take him to your vet. -is he still active? If he seems dumpy/depressed you should take him in. If he's eating and otherwise acting ok, it reasonable to give him another day. If he is still vomiting going on 4 to 5 days, take him in. If he is not eating or is acting depressed/lethargic, don't wait; take him in. I hope that's helpful! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
